Mar. 4, 2005 – According to CIA officers speaking under the condition of anonymity to the Washington Post, an Afghan prisoner "disappeared" two years ago after he died in a CIA-run jail. According to the Post’s sources, who were reportedly knowledgeable about the case, the young man whose name is not known was ordered held overnight in a cold cell and died from hypothermia. A CIA operative allegedly ordered Afghan guards employed by the agency to strip the detainee, and leave him chained to a concrete floor overnight, where he died.
A government official told the Post that the detainee "just disappeared from the face of the earth." He was buried in an unmarked grave in an unmarked cemetery, no family members were notified, and he was not on any lists of detainees. The detainee’s connection to a terrorist organization or other violent group was never established. The CIA inspector general says it is investigating the case, but meanwhile the CIA officer who ordered the treatment has been promoted.
