Mar. 8, 2005 – A group of soldiers from a Florida National Guard unit serving in Iraq videotaped themselves kicking a badly wounded Iraqi detainee who had been shot and whose arms were bound behind his back.
The tape, which was obtained by the Palm Beach Post, also shows a member of the unit poking corpses with his foot, while another scene shows soldiers making the arm of a corpse appear to wave. The Post displayed excerpts from the video on its web site Monday; its existence was first revealed in Army documents obtained by the ACLU under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).
Soldiers titled the video "Ramadi Madness" after the Iraqi city where it was taped. They reportedly edited and compiled a DVD in January 2004 consisting of various scenes recorded while they were on patrol.
According to Reuters, documents released by the Pentagon indicate that Army investigators looked into the matter but decided no criminal charges would be filed against the soldiers. The Army labeled the actions "inappropriate" rather than criminal.
