Jun 13, 2004 - Eight civilians and four Iraqi police officers are dead after a car bombing outside Camp Cuervo, a joint US-Iraqi military base in eastern Baghdad on Sunday. Witnesses told reporters that an Iraqi police patrol tried to stop the bomber’s vehicle as it sped toward the base, but the car crossed the median and exploded, according correspondents for the Washington Post. Twelve people were injured in the attack. At least 15 other car bombings have targeted US and Iraqi security installations since the beginning of June, and violent engagements are currently occurring at 35-40 per day, military officers told the Post.

Also Sunday, a senior Education Ministry official was gunned down in a hail of bullets as he left his home in the Ghazaliya district of Baghdad. Kamal Jarrah, 63, head of cultural relations with foreign countries and the United Nations, became the second senior government official to be assassinated this weekend.
