Government ordered to explain detainments at Guantanamo Bay

Sept. 22, 2004 – A federal judge has ordered the US Department of Defense to justify its detainment of 60 of the men held at Cuba’s Guantánamo Bay military prison for nearly three years without charges. US District Judge Joyce Hens Green gave the Defense Department until October 18 to provide the charges or factual basis for holding each of the detainees who have sued the government in an attempt to move stalled negotiations in their cases.
