Unregistered Jordanian student deported without hearing

by Amanda Luker

Oct. 13, 2004 – After failing to register with a federal program that tracks visitors from primarily Muslim and Middle Eastern countries, a Jordanian college student was ordered deported Tuesday. Abdelqader Abu-Snaineh, 22, was attending La Roche College outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, when he was led off campus in handcuffs for not registering with the National Security Entry Exit Registration System, a controversial program set up after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. Abu-Snaineh said his failure to register was not a political decision but was because he was overwhelmed by a heavy course load and had not gotten to it yet. Judge Donald Ferlise, however, ordered the student to be deported without a hearing because he believed Abu-Snaineh purposely avoided registration.
