Palm Beach voter machine tests hit a glitch

by Amanda Luker

Oct. 15, 2004 – Testing of Palm Beach County’s electronic voting machines came to a halt Tuesday when the computer network at the elections office crashed just before testing was to begin. Despite election officials' insistence that the malfunction would not affect the touch-screen machines during the November 2 election, some say the crash is representative of the volatility of the electronic electoral system. US Representative Robert Wexler (D-Florida) told the Palm Beach Post, "This is very troublesome, that less than three weeks away from a presidential election we have problems with these machines." Wexler is leading the charge to force Florida to provide a paper trail for its electronic voting machines.
