May 24, 2005 – Pro-choice supporters expressed disappointment Monday over the US Supreme Court's decision to hear a case this fall that could affect the health, safety and privacy of women.
The case concerns a 2003 New Hampshire law that would require health care providers to give 48 hours prior notice to a parent of a woman under age 18 who requests an abortion.
Lower courts have declared the law unconstitutional because it does not include an exception for young women in instances of medical emergencies. The state is appealing those decisions.
In the past, the high court has ruled that laws restricting abortions must contain exceptions for when women’s health is at risk.
