U.N. Relief Supplies, Teams Sit Waiting for Bush to Say ‘Please’

Sept. 4, 2005 – Even though the United Nations has at the ready disaster relief teams, generators, water storage tanks, high-energy biscuits, water purification tablets, airplanes, tents and other supplies for emergency relief, the Bush administration has not asked the world body for help.

According to the UN’s News Service, Secretary-General Kofi Annan called the US president Friday to let him know that the UN is immediately able to provide supplies and personnel experienced in disaster relief, if only the US will request the help.

So far, even as Washington takes heat for a sluggish and inadequate response to the Hurricane Katrina crisis, there has been no indication from Ambassador John Bolton or other members of the Bush administration as to whether they plan to accept Annan’s offer.
