Sept. 15, 2004 – The Justice Department is opening an investigation into the arrest of a Muslim lawyer in Oregon, falsely linked to the Madrid train bombings. Brandon Mayfield was accused after investigators misread fingerprints taken at the crime scene. Now Mayfield is arguing the Federal Bureau of Investigations and the Justice Department inappropriately searched his home and jailed him for two weeks partially due to his Muslim faith.
The Justice Department has opened another investigation into the Bureau's handling of the case. The FBI claimed the mistake was due to the poor quality of the fingerprint and is conducting its own separate investigation into how the evidence was handled.
