300 Iraqi security force members chose not to fight in Samarra

Oct. 21, 2004 – A British commander in charge of training new Iraqi soldiers told USA Today that a large portion of an Iraqi unit deployed to Samarra in September left the force after a car bomb that killed one and injured eight. According to British Army Brigadier Nigel Aylwin-Foster, about 100 of the 750-soldier unit left immediately after the bombing and within a few days, another 200 had deserted.
