World News UN confirms Iraqi gays tortured, executed

An official UN human-rights report released last week has finally confirmed the “violent campaigns” against Iraqi gays and the “assassinations of homosexuals in Iraq.” Including a “Sexual Orientation” section for the first time, the report says the UN’s Human Rights Office in Iraq is aware of religious courts in which suspected gays are tried and punished, sometimes by execution. Many such killings reportedly stem from a religious edict declared by the Shia leader Ayatollah Ali Al-Sistani encouraging his followers to exterminate gays.

Remarks: Oddly, this article from a queer newspaper repeated the UN report’s unfortunate phrase “gays and rapists,” as if their similar treatment at the hands of these Islamists warrants parallel wording like that. A lot of this reporting is just blank assertions with no discernible sourcing, so it’s hard to know how the reporter knows the extraordinary things he is stating as established fact. –BD
