U.S. News California may ban conventional light bulbs by 2012

California Assemblyman Lloyd Levine is to propose legislation that would make his state the first to ban incandescent lightbulbs in favor of energy-saving compact fluorescent bulbs by 2012. Environmentalists say the energy-saving bulbs last 10 times longer and use about 25% percent of the energy of conventional incandescent bulbs, which convert only about 5% of their energy into light. But even a complete statewide switch would eliminate less than 2 million of the 500 million metric tons of greenhouse gases California produces each year.
