U.S. News Black students not sharing in national AP course gains

The percentage of US high school students in Advanced Placement courses rose to 24% in 2006 from 16% 2000, the program reported yesterday, but black students – who constitute 14% of the student population – gained less than a percentage point to just 6.9% enrollment in the courses that help determine college admissions. Native American students remain significantly underrepresented in AP classrooms as well, and Hispanic students are underrepresented in many states. No states with large numbers of African American students achieved equity.
