World News Italy demands trial of U.S. soldier

An Italian judge has ruled that a US soldier should stand trial for the fatal shooting of an Italian intelligence agent in Iraq. Mario Lozana has been indicted for the involuntary killing of Nicola Calipari, who he shot during an attack on the car Calipari was in. Lozana was also indicted for the attempted murder of 2 other people in the car, which was taking leftist Italian journalist Giuliana Sgrena to Baghdad airport after securing her release by Iraqi kidnappers.

Lozano will almost certainly be tried in absentia as he has already been exonerated by the US. The defense had tried to have the case dismissed, arguing that Lozano had merely been following orders.

Main Source: Aljazeera

Remarks: Good to see Aljazeera, that bastion of anti-US bias, has decided the attack was at a checkpoint rather than an ambush, which to my knowledge is still very much disputed, since the US squad apparently wasn't blocking the road. --BD
