U.S. News NYPD stalled protesters’ release from toxic 'jail'

Hundreds of protesters arrested during the 2004 Republican National Convention were held for up to 6 times longer than those arrested on charges unrelated to the convention, according to documents released today. Police locked up more than 1,800 people during the 4-day event. A judge last month rejected the city's effort to keep secret most of the files and videotapes documenting the arrests. The documents also revealed that police made toxic-exposure complaints about the holding pen on a Hudson River pier where arrestees were processed.
