World News Bomber hits Baghdad bridge; 8 killed in parliament strike

A suicide bomber detonated a truck bomb on a bridge spanning the Tigris river in northern Baghdad, killing at least 10 people and injuring 26 others, according to hospital officials. The blast collapsed the steel structure of the Al-Sarafiya Bridge, plunging several cars into the river below during the morning rush hour. Police were seen trying to rescue as many as 20 people whose cars plummeted into the river. Al-Sarafiya Bridge is one of the oldest and highest in the Iraqi capital.

An explosion ripped through the Iraqi parliament building's cafeteria inside the capital's tightly guarded Green Zone today, killing 8 people -- at least two of them lawmakers -- in the latest security breach in what is supposed to be Baghdad's safest area. The strike was apparently carried out by a suicide bomber who penetrated 6 layers of security.
